Early Morning Hour Thoughts-First Day of Vacation
This is Martin Academy of Martial Arts first blog. My first thoughts for this are a result of a small book I read this morning. Before I get into the book I will preface with telling you Kasey, Dr. Katherine Best and myself have taken a vacation in Blue Ridge, Ga. This is a quiet getaway to calm the inner mind of daily chaos and do things that seem to be hard to get done. Like time for yourself, or time to do things that always seem to get put off. I know I have more things on my list than the week will allow but having time to organize is just as important as the doing. Dr. Best will be working on research, writing and meditation. I will be working on more organization for the school, Silat Curriculum, video and hot tub and wine meditations. I’m sure you all will hear about the trip from Kasey’s perspective in her next newsletter. She was great during the 10 hour trip here. Not once did I hear, “ Are we there yet?”
So for my first morning on vacation after a short walk up and down a few hills was to read the book “What the Most Successful People Do Before Breakfast by Laura Vanderkam. As a martial artist and as an owner / head instructor of Martin Academy of Martial Arts I want our training to go beyond just the kick, punch, takedown, submission, throw and disarming weapons. Martial Arts is a way of life and one that helps us to become better person through the process of training than we would without it. It’s the journey, not the destination because there is no destination. The journey is of the constant physical improvement in the many disciplines we teach as well as the improvement of the person you are outside of the academy. It’s what you become as a result of the training.
Not everything will work for everyone but I believe the time to quit improving ourselves is when they close the coffin and until that happens I’m on the path.
Thank you to Sifu Dan Inosanto, Sifu Francis Fong and Ajarn Chai Sirisute. Teachers and friends who have been in my life for over 30 years.
Thoughts on the book next time, I’m taking a moment for me on the porch.
